1SA 2019 - 2020
Welcome to 1SA's class page!
Hi my name is Miss Allan and this is my fifth year teaching at Offley Primary Academy and it is my second year teaching Year 1, which I am thoroughly excited about. I coordinate Science with Mrs Till and we are already looking forward to our next Science week here at Offley. I am passionate about embracing practical opportunities for the children to expand their learning by making lessons fun. At home I love spending time with my two dogs; especially my pug Darcy, I also thoroughly enjoy craft projects. 1SA is also very lucky to have Mrs Perry spending some time in our class during the week. Each week I will update our class page and share 1SA's learning journey with you all.
1SA’s P.E slots take place on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their P.E. kit for each of these days.
Children are prompted to change their reading book each day, if they have read their book. We encourage children to read at least four times a week and they will receive a sticker for this, consistent reading each week will enable children to receive the reading treat at the end of term.
Once again we will be hosting Science week in school. This event allows our pupils to get involved with hands on experiments and listen to science and engineering professionals. We want to engage pupils in jobs for the future and this is a great insight for them, so please come and share your skills and passion for science and engineering. Examples of previous helpers:
• Structural engineers doing a hands on experiment teaching how to make structures out of spaghetti and paper
• Nurse – teaching children first aid
• Forensic team - setting up a crime scene and getting the children to solve the crime
These are just a few of the ideas that we have had in previous years, so if you know anyone who could spare half a day or even an hour, then we would love to hear from you. Please call the school office on 01270 685355 to express your interest or email firstname.lastname@example.org or see Miss Allan or Mrs Till.
Science week is Monday 9th March – Friday 13th March 2020
In maths this week, we finished our length and height topic by measuring jungle animals using our rulers. We found out that a Poison Dart Frog is the same size as one of our rubbers. We have now begun our new topic, numbers to 40. So far we have made numbers to 40 using tens frames, thinking carefully about the tens and ones. To help with our counting we have used the stem sentence “make 10 and count on.”
In English, we have used role play to describe the lion from the point of view of a different animal such as a: sloth, hippo and cheetah. We then moved into learning about suffixes and how they can be used to describe and compare animals.
In art, we have learnt the printing technique, inspired by Tingatinga artwork. We used a range of materials such as toy car wheels and cotton reels.
In science, we discussed the season winter and the changes that we can see. Here we are exploring the outdoor area, we noticed that some trees were evergreen and made some observational drawings of what we saw. As part of our animals including humans topic we identified different animals and began to put them into groups such as: have feathers and live in the sea.
During our My Happy Mind session, we learnt how team H-A-P (hippocampus, amygdala and pre-frontal cortex) change roles when we feel sad, scared or worried. We learnt the method of happy breathing to help our team H-A-P get back on track and make us feel better.
