2SA 2017 - 2018
Hi my name is Miss Allan and this is my third year teaching at Offley Primary Academy. I coordinate Science with Mrs Maddox and we are already very excited for our next Science week here at Offley. I am passionate about embracing practical opportunities for the children to expand their learning by making lessons fun. At home I love spending time with my three dogs; especially my pug Darcy, I also thoroughly enjoy craft projects. 2SA is also very lucky to have Mrs Clarkson and Mrs Gray spending some time in our class during the week. We also have the fabulous Miss France as part of our team.
2SA’s P.E slots take place on a Tuesday and Friday afternoon. Please ensure your child has their P.E. kit for each of these days.
Children are prompted to change their reading book each day, if they have read their book. We encourage children to read atleast four times a week and they will recieve a sticker for this, consistent reading each week will enable children to receive the reading treat at the end of term.
Wow! What a super week we have had here in 2SA!
In Maths, we have been investigating 2D shapes by looking at their properties such as sides, vertices and lines of symmetry. We explored polygons by creating them using marshmallows and matchsticks and tried to solve a variety of challenges.
Here we are testing whether 2D shapes have any lines of symmetry and creating our own figures using a variety of 2D shapes.
In English, we have been working extremely hard on our own journey stories. We have applied all of our learning and role play activities to ensure that our writing is exciting, makes senses and shows off our sentence skills.
As it has been Science Week here at Offley we have had the opportunity to engage in a wide range of science activities.
On Monday we made a trip to Mrs Robertson's office as something very strange had happened there. We discussed as a class what could have possibly caused this and then found out that it was crater!
The peculiar incident introduced us to the whole school competition, to create a rover to land eggs safely. We worked in teams to predict, design and create prototype rovers to transport the eggs.
After that, we chose a final design using the prototypes with the aim to land as many eggs as we could safely. We did very well as we safely landed four eggs, well done 2SA!
On Wednesday, we met Angela from Dogs Trust and we learnt about dog's senses and used our own to guess what dog items were hidden.
We also were very lucky to take part in a session delivered by Mrs Feaver, a medical writer. In teams we planned our own clinical trial to test a new medicine to help stop some very peculiar diseases.
On Thursday, Mr Darlington (a real pirate) came to Year 2 and showed us how to make fantastic rockets. Each group designed and adapted their bottle rockets and then we launched them, watching the great chemical reaction. We also had the chance to explore a fantastic science resource, Virtuali-Tee which provided us with a view inside our bodies.
On Friday, we had a visit from Zoo2U where we learnt lots about animals with different diets; we met a tortoise, Boa Constrictor and an Opossum. We also found out about how their bodies are adapted to match their diets.
I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that helped make Science Week possible!
Next week (19th March)
In Maths, we are going to be sorting 2D shapes based on their properties.
In English, we are going to continue writing our own journey stories.
