My name is Mr Mason. I have been at Offley for over four years and I have been teaching for over 16 years. During this time I have taught across schools in Kent and Cheshire. I am a member of the senior leadership team running the Lower Keystage 2 team; I am also the Assessment and History coordinator. I am married with 4 children, I keep fit and love reading. My favourite genre is historical fiction, though I love any type of history.
First of all, I'd like to wish everyone a 'Very Happy New Year!" I hope you all had a lovely Christmas. A BIG 'Thank you' for my presents, cards and seasons wishes. It was very much appreciated.
The children have had a busy start even though we have only been in for three days
In math this week the children have been working on multiplying 3 digit numbers by one digit using the ladder or standard short method. They have then gone onto solving both division equations and word problems using a number line. They have also explored if a problem is sharing or grouping. Below is a simple model of using a number line.
We now have a new Math website for the chidren to use and practice their skills. It is called PRODIGY and all the childreb now have log in info. Next week we are going to be looking at multiplication.
The school has bought into TTRock Stars which is a fantastic website designed to challenge the children to learn their timetables. You will hear a lot more about this over the course of the year but please support your child in playing the games.
In Literacy this week we have been using drama to learn our Myths and Legend story 'How the crow brought daylight' We have been using this to plan our own innovation story using a wolf that brings darkness. Below you can see our drama based on the story.
In PBL we have started our new topic: What would the world look like if all the ice went? We have started to focus on the Northern Hemisphere, the North Pole and the Arctic circle. We have explored the differences between the North Pole and the countries which fringe the circle. This week we started looking at Alaska and Canada and exploring human geography, especially how and where humans live at the Arctic circle. Next week we will be looking at the physical geography, especially mountains. This will lead into Climate Change and what is happening to the ice. In music the children have been learning about Beethoven. In art we have been looking at Van Gough, In P.E. the children have been swimming and doing gymnastics. Our science is based on sound and this week the children have been planning an investigation to explore what happens to the sound of a drum as you move away from it.
