5JM 2018 - 2019
Welcome to 5JM's class page!
Hello, I'm Mrs Maddox and this year will be my fourth here at Offley. I thoroughly enjoy teaching in Year 5 and this year I will also be co-leading mathematics with Mrs Furlong.
I have lived in Cheshire for over three years now and love exploring new places within the local area. In my spare time I enjoy baking, reading, exercising, going for long walks and to music concerts and spending time with my friends and family.
PE days are Thursday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor)
Times table tests are on Thursday
Spelling tests are on Friday
Homework will be from the choices sheet, in addition to Maths and English when given out.
Week ending: 15.03.19
In English this week we have continued to learn our explanation texts using Talk for Writing. We then boxed up and identified the features, which included lots of technical vocabulary, dashes and brackets to punctuate extra information and diagrams to support the explanation of the process.
We have been focusing on percentages and angles this week in maths. The children have been converting fractions to find percentages, using their knowledge that percentage means a fraction of 100 and that they should therefore make the denominator 100. We then solved some tricky problems linked to this. Towards the end of the week we began looking at angles; identifying right, acute, obtuse and reflex angles and understanding their sizes and what they can range between. Finally, they estimated the sizes of angles and then used a protractor to measure and check these.
The children explored dissolving and in particular the solubility of sugar this week in science and carried out their own investigations by changing one variable e.g. the temperature of the water or the mass of the sugar. They really enjoyed this and are starting to gauge a good understanding of the different variables within an experiment.
Our whole school competition for Science Week involved creating a 'Rube Goldberg' style chain reaction, using at least four different elements. The children worked in small groups to create these and had great fun!
We are learning Samba drumming with Mr Proctor this term and will be getting into the carnival spirit! Our drummer of the week was James Dean - well done! Letters have been handed out and our next drumming concert is on Thursday 4th April at 2pm until approximately 3:15pm. This is the same day as our class assembly and we hope to see lots of friendly faces for a fun day of performance!
