5JM 2018 - 2019
Welcome to 5JM's class page!
Hello, I'm Mrs Maddox and this year will be my fourth here at Offley. I thoroughly enjoy teaching in Year 5 and this year I will also be co-leading mathematics with Mrs Furlong.
I have lived in Cheshire for over three years now and love exploring new places within the local area. In my spare time I enjoy baking, reading, exercising, going for long walks and to music concerts and spending time with my friends and family.
PE days are Thursday (indoor) and Friday (outdoor)
Times table tests are on Thursday
Spelling tests are on Friday
Homework will be from the choices sheet, in addition to Maths and English when given out.
Week ending: 16.11.18
It's been a busy week in 5JM and the children have worked hard to develop their understanding of anti-bullying and how to look after their mental health. We also enjoyed the pantomime on Friday, which was Alladin, and dressed in spots to celebrate Children in Need!
In maths the children have continued to use the associative law to multiply by multiples of 10:
e.g. 20 x 16 = 10 x 32.
We used the STEM sentence [halve] the multiplier (20 in this calculation); [double] the multiplicand (16) and the product stays the same to help us remember this method.
They also used their knowledge of factors to factorise the multiplier into factor pairs:
e.g. 20 x 16 = 10 x 2 x 16 or 16 x 20 = 16 x 2 x 10
Following this, we used the associative law to make calculations easier and regrouped calculations in preparation for multiplying two digits by two digits.
The children finished writing their Greek myths in English this week and then moved on to using Talk for Writing to learn an advert for a new Italian restaurant.
Our new BIG question linked to the Ancient Greeks is: 'Brains or Brawn?', and the children learnt about how the brain works this week. They also engaged in some exciting activities in order to make their brains work 'smarter', such as a colour test, memory tray activity, memory sheet and pairs game. Ask your child to explain what they did in these activities and how they were able to improve their performance in each of them.
This term we will be learning Taiko drumming every Thursday afternoon with Mr Proctor - our drummer of the week this week was Amber Horton! Well done!
