5JM 2017 - 2018
Welcome to 5JM's class page!
Hello I'm Mrs Maddox and I am currently teaching Year 5. I have now been at Offley for over 2 years, having initially covered Mrs Casey's maternity leave.
I have now lived in Cheshire for almost 3 years, having previously lived in Luton. Last summer I got married and I think it will take me longer to get used to my new name than it will for the children! Outside of school I love baking, reading, keeping fit and spending time with my family and friends.
Week ending: 18.05.18
We have crammed an awful lot into English this week! The children have boxed up and identified the features of the non-chronological reports we learnt last week, used colons and commas to punctuate lists, written expanded noun phrases, connected clauses with semi-colons and conjunctive adverbs and used apostrophes for contraction possession! We then used the internet and books to find out information about the Tudors.
We have had a very practical week in maths - we have proved that the angles in squares, rectangles and other quadrilaterals total 360 degrees by drawing the shapes, ripping off the angles and placing them together. The children have also been folding paper squares and rectangles and using bar models to find missing angles within them.
We have moved on to looking at forces in our science work and the children are building up their skills and knowledge to try and answer the question 'Which Viking boat will be the fastest through the North Sea, reaching Holy Island first to plunder the treasures of the monastary and kill the monks?'
Last week we carried out two experiments; one related to friction and what the best surface would be to pull the longboat across when it had to come out of water, and the other directly linked to our question above. The children tested three different shaped boats to see which one travelled the quickest across a certain length of water. As one of the science co-ordinators, it has been great to really see the children working on their investigation skills and producing some lovely evauations from them.
This term we are learning Japanese Taiko drumming with Mrs Proctor! Our drummer of the week was Sam
Bebbington! Well done!
This half the children will be having outdoor PE on Monday and indor PE on Thursdays and will therefore need their kit in school on these days.
Our times tables test will be on a Thursday and our spelling test on a Friday.
