5JM 2017 - 2018
Welcome to 5JM's class page!
Hello I'm Mrs Maddox and I am currently teaching Year 5. I have now been at Offley for almost 2 years, having initially covered Mrs Casey's maternity leave.
I have now lived in Cheshire for two years, having previously lived in Luton. This summer I got married and I think it will take me longer to get used to my new name than it will for the children! Outside of school I love baking, reading, keeping fit and spending time with my family and friends.
Week ending: 17.11.17
In maths this week the children have been using their investigative skills to explore what the prime numbers are up to 100 and what square and cube numbers are. Linked to this, they also solved some tricky problems on square numbers.
The children have also had a session in the computer suite working on the Times Table Rock Stars website. They have received a letter and a small slip of paper with their username and password on, which they have stuck in their diaries. Unfortunately, we ran out of time so some children have not set their rock speed and will need to do this at home if they are able to. If they need more time in school to do this please let me know.
In English this week the children finished writing their explanation texts about the lifecycle of a plant and uplevelled them to make them more effective for the reader.
We then moved on to looking at the classic text 'The Velveteen Rabbit' by Margery Williams. The children identified features of older literature, such as words and phrases, and looked for similes and examples of show not tell.
In topic we have moved on from plant lifecycles to that of a human. We ordered the main stages of the human lifecycle this week and then moved on to looking more closely at the period from a baby to a child. Thank you for sending in pictures for your child to put into their books; they were adorable!
We are currently learning the Samba style of performance in drumming this term with Mr Proctor. Our drummer of the week was Oliver Johnson - well done!
Mrs Bloor is creating a global learning display in the infant hall and would like to know if you have any family members who live abroad. If you do, please bring in a photograph of them detailing their relation to you and where in the world they live. Thank you.
We will also be studying 'The Secret Garden' by Frances Hodgson Burnett in our English lessons.
The children will now be having PE on Mondays and Tuesdays and will therefore need their kit in school on these days. As the weather is turning colder your child may wish to wear long jogging bottoms and could I please ask that that they have a jumper or zip-up to wear too. Thank you.
Our times tables test will be on a Thursday and our spellling test on a Friday.
