5JM 2017 - 2018
Welcome to 5JM's class page!
Hello I'm Mrs Maddox and I am currently teaching Year 5. I have now been at Offley for over 2 years, having initially covered Mrs Casey's maternity leave.
I have now lived in Cheshire for almost 3 years, having previously lived in Luton. Last summer I got married and I think it will take me longer to get used to my new name than it will for the children! Outside of school I love baking, reading, keeping fit and spending time with my family and friends.
Week ending: 16.03.18
In maths this week we have rounded off our fractions topic by using bar models in order to solve problems using multiplication, division and scaling simple fractions. We have now moved onto developing our understanding of what decimals are and writing them from visual representations.
In English the class finished writing their narratives based on 'The Journey' by Aaron Becker and uplevelled these to include higher-level vocabulary, phrases and punctuation.
The children then wrote a newspaper article about an intriguing image as the cold write to our next topic. We then began to use Talk 4 Writing to learn a newspaper article about Usain Bolt and the children started to identify features commonly found in newspapers.
This week has been Science Week 2018 and the children were lucky enough to have some special visitors come in! Mrs Mayell told the children about her job as a chemical engineer and explored the fire triangle and Mr Pepper, who works for Bentley Motors in Crewe, brought in a top-of-the-range Bentayga and spoke to the children about the interior finishes you can choose if you are ever lucky enough to purchase a Bentley!
The Star Lab also visited and the children had a great time learning about Tim Peake's time in the I.S.S. and the different constellations in the sky.
On Monday a mysterious crater also landed in Mrs Robertson's office (it's a good job she wasn't in school that day!). From this, the children looked at how the Curiosity Rover had landed on Mars and were tasked with landing some special cargo on the crater - raw eggs!
The children worked in teams to design a rover and had certain materials they could use to make a prototype. Everyone then voted for a winning design to enter the whole school competition and the successful group made their design and tested it with raw eggs. The winning team managed to land one egg safely! Well done!
We are learning African Djembe drumming with Mr Proctor this term! Our drummer of the week was Luci Bostock! Well done!
This half the children will be having outdoor PE on Monday and cricket on Thursdays with Mr Tomlinson outside weather permitting and will therefore need their kit in school on these days. As the weather is turning colder your child may wish to wear long jogging bottoms and could I please ask that that they have a jumper or zip-up to wear too. Thank you.
Our times tables test will be on a Thursday and our spelling test on a Friday.
