Mr Mason

Mr Mason

Welcome to 5SM

My name is Simon Mason and I am one of the Assistant Vice Principals at Offley Primary Academy. I have been here for nearly eight years but I have been teaching for over twenty. I am married with four gorgeous children, two cats and a mad rabbit. My hobbies include rugby (playing and coaching), reading, gardening and running.

I want to reiterate that as a school, and as class teachers, we will be spending a lot of time getting ourselves back into the habit of school and learning. In yera5 I am going to take time to listen and respond to the children about concerns or worries they will have and we will work as a small community to support one another.

Week 4

Last week was fantastic and the children settled back in so well again. As I have said before they are a lovely class and I am sure we will meet and conquer all challenges head on.

This week in guded reading we read the story of Rosa Banks in the book: 'Good night stories for Rebel Girls' and we looked at her stand against racism. Our writing this weeks was linked to  the 'Charity - Kick it out' and the children designed and wrote a web page for the organisation. In addition, they wrote a first person letter as Rosa Parks to the Montgomery Bus company, asking them to stop segregation.. our word work has been around key vocabulary related to racism.

In maths we have been spending time looking at place value. The children have been  working with numbers upto and including a million. We have been counting in 1,000s and 10,000s and exploring the correlation of numbers getting 10 x bigger. The children have also been looking at the value of digits withing 6 digit numbers. In addition to this we have been exploring using place vale to add and subtract up to 3 five digit numbers. We have explored different strategies and looked at the most efficient for different types of equations. We have looked at regrouping, partitioning, using basic number facts and place value holders.

Playing our place value game

Our PBL is history based and is a short topic on Ancient Greece. This week we looked at the roots of the modern Olympic Games, where they originated, what sports the Greeks took part in (compared this to the modern day games), when and why they stopped and when the restarted in the 19th Century.

In art we will be looking at developing and improving  our sketching skills.

In PE, we started circuit training, developing our core strength and muscle conditioning. In addition we started some athletics and focussed on starts and using our whole body to create speed. We have been practicing passing the baton in relays,

Our RE this term is Hinduism as this week we compared a Christian wedding ceremony to a Hindu one, In French the children were learning to share how they felt.

As part of our return to school, the children continued to  worke as a class developing ideas and phrases based around our four school drivers. We have put these into word art. These are available for download on this page.

Just a reminder that the children need their PE kit permanently in school. If girls have earrings then they need to be able to remove them and replace them themselves if needed. We are actively encouraging social distancing where we can and the children are washing their hands regularly.

Homework will be available next week but we will be breaking from the normal due to COVID and keeping to online activities. We will send home a set of activities if you do not have online access. These will also be on class pages to compliment the online tasks.
