6KW 2020 - 2021
Welcome to 6KW’s Class Page!
Hi! Welcome to our class; we can't wait to work with you this year and welcome you back to school after a very strange time away.
On this page you'll find some information about your teachers and important information about your timetable as well as weekly updates, spellings and some homework.
Hello, my name is Miss Warren and this is my second year teaching at Offley and I am really excited about my move up to year 6 :-) After graduating with a degree in Education Studies, I completed the first half of my teacher training here at Offley and could not wait to become part of the team at this amazing school. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my friends, family and my very mischievous dog Tyson. I also love reading, baking and travelling!
We are also very lucky to have Mr. Mason supporting both classes most mornings :-)
Autumn Term Information
This term, our topic will be linked to World War 2.
Our text to start this half term is 'Of Thee I Sing' by Barack Obama. It is a fiction text about inspirational people from around the world and will be the basis of all our English this term.
Each week I will update the website with information about what is currently being covered. I will also upload any homework or spellings given out that week. If you have any questions or queries feel free to see me at the end of the school day or contact me through the school office. Admin will then forward on any messages or arrange meetings at a mutually convenient time.
PE- This will take place on a Monday afternoon. The children will need indoor and outdoor kit.
Accelerated Reader - I have copied below is the the link for AR book finder. This means children will be able to check to see if books from home are within their reading range. http://www.arbookfind.co.uk
Guided Reading - Alongside Accelerated Reader, every Friday we will teach a designated guided reading session that will use high quality texts linked to our usual English lessons.
Times tables tests - These will take place every Thursday morning
Homework - Spellings will be given out every Friday, and will be tested the following Friday. Other homework will commence later on in the term.
Another fantastic week has flown by!
This week in Maths we began our new topic, Fractions! The children have shown a fantastic attitude this week and have worked really hard to simplify fractions before moving on to comparing and ordering them. This week was mainly about getting the children to understand that there are MANY ways to compare and order fractions. We had a go at using paper strips, cuisenaire rods, fraction bars and formal written methods to prove our answers. Next week, we will be moving on to adding and subtracting fractions.
We have all really enjoyed our English lessons this week. We read a few pages of our new text 'Can we save the tiger?' and then also read about the Black Rhino. Our main focus this week has been modal verbs and adverbs for possibility. The children had to include modal verbs and adverbs for possibility in their sentences about tigers for our working wall!
'These majestic creatures will definitely go extinct if we don't do something soon.'
This week, we have been learning all about refraction! The children noticed that when a straw is placed in a glass of water, it looks bent and if you place a horizontal arrow behind a glass of water it flips to point the opposite way! The children were also amazed to see a coin disappear when they placed a glass on top of it and slowly filled it with water. After these activities, we looked at why these things all happened and learned that it is due to the speed of light slowing down and bending as it travels through a dense area.
As well as all of that, the children have been very busy developing their netball skills in P.E, reading and answering questions about the Jungle Book in our shared reading session, developing their audacity skills in Computing and learning some more war songs in Music. We have also began making our Air raid shelters in DT and these will hopefully start coming together more over the next two weeks.
Also, a massive congratulations to our Head Boy/Girl, Deputy Head Boy/Girl and those who made it onto the Prefect team! I could not be more proud of each and every one of you and I know you are all going to do a fantastic job.
Have a lovely weekend year 6 :-)
- Spellings have been uploaded on here ready for a test next Friday.
