6KW 2020 - 2021
Welcome to 6KW’s Class Page!
Hi! Welcome to our class; we can't wait to work with you this year and welcome you back to school after a very strange time away.
On this page you'll find some information about your teachers and important information about your timetable as well as weekly updates, spellings and some homework.
Hello, my name is Miss Warren and this is my second year teaching at Offley and I am really excited about my move up to year 6 :-) After graduating with a degree in Education Studies, I completed the first half of my teacher training here at Offley and could not wait to become part of the team at this amazing school. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my friends, family and my very mischievous dog Tyson. I also love reading, baking and travelling!
We are also very lucky to have the lovely Mrs Edwards working across both classes :-)
Autumn Term Information
This term, our topic will be linked to World War 2.
Our text to start this half term is 'Of Thee I Sing' by Barack Obama. It is a fiction text about inspirational people from around the world and will be the basis of all our English this term.
Each week I will update the website with information about what is currently being covered. I will also upload any homework or spellings given out that week. If you have any questions or queries feel free to see me at the end of the school day or contact me through the school office. Admin will then forward on any messages or arrange meetings at a mutually convenient time.
PE- This will take place on a Monday afternoon. The children will need indoor and outdoor kit.
Accelerated Reader - I have copied below is the the link for AR book finder. This means children will be able to check to see if books from home are within their reading range. http://www.arbookfind.co.uk
Guided Reading - Alongside Accelerated Reader, every Friday we will teach a designated guided reading session that will use high quality texts linked to our usual English lessons.
Times tables tests - These will take place every Thursday morning
Homework - Spellings will be given out every Friday, and will be tested the following Friday. Other homework will commence later on in the term.
Week ending 25th September
Thank you for another fantastic week 6KW!
In Maths, we have continued to use our place value knowledge to help us solve addition and subtraction calculations. At the beginning of the week, we used number lines and PPW models to help us solve some tricky calculations and on Friday, we looked at a variety of incomplete number patterns and used what we know to complete them! The children's attitudes have been amazing this week during our Maths lessons and I could not be prouder of how hard they have worked.
This week in English, we have been learning about Jackie Robinson (the first African-American to play major league baseball) and we have had some fantastic discussions about how we think he must have felt during his first game for the Brooklyn Dodgers and what he might have been thinking. We watched the trailer of the movie '42' and then had a go at writing a 1st person narrative from Jackie's prespective. The next day, we worked in groups to create a Newsround-style article about why people should celebrate Jackie Robinson Day. The children have been trying their best to remember their basic spelling and punctuation this week, but have also had a go at including parenthesis in their writing as well as present perfect tense and modal verbs.
In Science, we have been learning a little bit more about the circulatory system and began looking at the functions of the heart and lungs in more detail. We also created our own circulatory system around the room to see the impact of sickle cell disease. The children LOVED creating their own game show this week where they had to ask and answer questions about the circulatory system functions. In PE, the children have had a great week developing their hockey and football skills and in History, we looked at some of the countries who were involved in WW2 and found out if they were part of the Allies, Axis or if they were Neutral. We then had a go at plotting the countries on a world map! Finally, on Friday, we had a fantastic afternoon writing our own rap in the style of Fresh Prince of Bel Air about racism and discrimination.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you all on Monday! :-)
