Phonics and Reading KS1
We follow the government's Letters and Sounds programme for teaching phonics. Letters and Sounds is taught daily. Groups from across all of KS1 are differentiated into small groups and are taught in phases 2- 6 from the programme.
In Year 1 children are screened using the National Phonics Screening Check. This assessment gathers information on the childrens ability to blend and segment decodable words to read, and their recognition of ‘tricky’ non decodable words.
At Offley, we use a wide range of texts from a variety of schemes. A large proportion but not all of our books are from the The Oxford Reading Tree series. The Oxford Owl website has some activties that you can do with your child at home.http://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/reading-owl/reading
PM Benchmarking assessments are used at Offley to help teachers understand what level their pupils are reading at. Benchmarking explicitly assess pupil’s instructional and independent reading levels using unseen, meaningful texts.
