Year 6 expectations

We ask that children, where possible, go to the toilet during break and lunch to avoid missing lesson time. This is to prepare them for high school. Children can bring their own equipment but they must use a black handwriting pen, not a biro. We ask that they bring their equipment to every lesson. We also provide the equipment they need.
Please keep an eye on your child’s mobile phone. We tend to have a lot of children bringing conversations into school about ‘group chats’ and the like so where possible, keep an eye on what your child is doing on their phone.
Please ensure your child is wearing full, Offley uniform, including on PE days. Please see our uniform policy.
No smart watches that are linked to phones are allowed as this is a safeguarding issue.
Additionally, no necklaces, bracelets or hoop earrings. Please ask your child to remove all earrings on PE days.

Our timetable

In the mornings, we group the children based on assessments they undertake. The group they are placed in depends on how much support we feel your child needs with that topic.
We may take small groups of children during assemblies or during afternoon sessions for ‘keep up’. This is after we have marked our morning sessions’ work and may feel as though your child needs further support to understand the topic.
We complete regular informal assessments to monitor progress and see whether more support is needed.

Support at home

We will be setting regular homework each week based on what we have been teaching in class. We reassure the children that if they spend any longer than 20 minutes on their homework, to stop and let us know that they found it tricky and we can support further in school. This will be from CGP books and we will tell the children the pages to complete in advance.
We also expect that children read regularly (3 or more times a week) as this will not only support their reading ability, but also help with reading questions in other subjects such as maths!
Children will also be tested on spellings once a week.

We also provide the opportunity to order revision packs closer to SATS and will ask in advance whether you would like to order these.
We ask that you do not complete any past SATs papers with your children at home, as we use these in school and it can affect their results if they have seen the papers before.

Boosters

Following assessments, we will be inviting children to booster club after school. This will be for reading and maths, and will help your child achieve the expected standard.
We ensure we keep it light and fun, however we have really seen the impact that these boosters can have, especially with confidence, and therefore we ask that as many children attend as possible.
